Iveco Daily Cooling System
The cooling system of the Iveco Daily keeps the engine at its optimum operating temperature (85-95°C). An overheating engine can suffer very serious damage: blown head gasket, warped cylinder head, seizure.
Main Components
- Engine radiator: aluminium/plastic heat exchanger in front of the engine
- Water pump: circulates the coolant around the system — it should be replaced together with the timing belt
- Thermostat: valve that regulates the flow — closed when cold, open when hot
- Fan (electric cooling fan): switches on when the temperature rises above 95°C
- Expansion tank: reservoir for excess coolant
- Intercooler: cools the compressed air from the turbo (separate circuit)
- Oil cooler: cools the engine oil (oil/water heat exchanger)
Common Problems
Overheating (High Temperature)
- Low coolant level: leak in the circuit (radiator, hoses, pump, head gasket)
- Thermostat stuck closed: coolant does not circulate through the radiator
- Fan not switching on: faulty temperature sensor, relay or fan motor
- Clogged radiator: dirty fins on the outside or blocked channels inside
Temperature Too Low
Thermostat stuck open: the engine does not reach its optimum temperature. High fuel consumption, poor cab heating.
Coolant
- Type: OAT antifreeze/anti-corrosion (red/pink colour) — Iveco Standard specification 18-1830
- Circuit capacity: 12-15 litres depending on the model
- Replacement: every 4 years or 120.000 km
- NEVER mix different colours (red with green). NEVER use water alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does an Iveco Daily radiator cost?
Aftermarket: 100-250€. Genuine: 250-500€. Labour: 100-200€. The intercooler costs 150-400€. We recommend also replacing the radiator cap and hoses if they are more than 8 years old.
How often should you change the coolant?
Every 4 years or 120.000 km. Always use red/pink OAT antifreeze specific for Iveco. Never mix with green antifreeze. Check the level in the expansion tank every month.
