Iveco Daily DPF — What It Is and How It Works

The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), also called FAP (Filtre à Particules), is a device in the exhaust system of the Iveco Daily that traps the soot particles produced by diesel combustion. It is mandatory on all Euro 5 (from 2011) and Euro 6 (from 2014) Dailys.

How regeneration works

The DPF collects soot during normal driving. When the filter reaches a certain saturation level (~80%), the ECU starts automatic regeneration: it injects extra fuel to raise the exhaust gas temperature to ~600°C, burning off the accumulated soot. This process lasts 15-30 minutes and takes place roughly every 300-500 km.

Common DPF Problems

DPF warning light on

The DPF warning light (yellow/amber) indicates that the filter is full and automatic regeneration cannot complete. Common causes:

  • Journeys too short: regeneration needs at least 20 minutes of driving at a steady speed (>60 km/h)
  • Heavy urban use: constant stop-start driving prevents regeneration
  • Faulty differential pressure sensor: the ECU cannot correctly detect the saturation level
  • Faulty injectors: they cannot generate the required temperature

Forced Regeneration

If the warning light stays on, a garage can carry out a forced regeneration using OBD diagnostics. It costs 50-100€. If the DPF is too clogged to regenerate, it will need chemical cleaning (200-400€) or replacement.

Catalytic Converter for Iveco Daily

The SCR catalytic converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction) works together with the AdBlue system on Euro 6 Daily vans to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx). Upstream of the catalytic converter are the NOx sensor and the temperature sensor.

Costs

Job Approximate cost
Forced Regeneration (Diagnostics) 50-100€
DPF Chemical Cleaning 200-400€
Aftermarket DPF 500-1.200€
Genuine DPF 1.500-3.000€
SCR Catalytic Converter 800-2.000€

Important: removing the DPF is illegal in Italy. The vehicle will fail its roadworthiness test and you risk heavy fines.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you force a DPF regeneration?

Drive on the motorway at 2.000-2.500 rpm for 30 minutes without stopping. If that doesn't work, you'll need a forced regeneration using diagnostics at a garage (50-100€). Never ignore the DPF warning light.

How long does an Iveco Daily DPF last?

With correct use (medium/long journeys, regular regenerations): 150.000-250.000 km. With mostly urban use: 80.000-120.000 km. Periodic chemical cleaning can extend its life.

Can the DPF be removed?

No, it has been illegal in Italy since 2014. Removing it means failing the roadworthiness test, administrative fines and withdrawal of the vehicle registration document. The correct solution is cleaning or replacement.
